Child Tax Credits - Who can claim

Child Tax Credits can usually be claimed for:

  • A new baby
  • Any child that lives with you, until the 31 August after the child’s 16th Birthday
  • Children under 20, if the child is in full time education or approved training

For Newborn babies, the Child Tax Credit Office can backdate your claim to the date the child was born, as long as this is within 3 months. If you claim after the child is 3 months old, you may lose out on some Child Tax Credits.

After the 31 August following the child’s 16th birthday, you can still claim Child Tax Credits for the child, as long as they are in full time education or approved training (up until they reach 20). For example, a child under 20 in education studying A levels, or Programme Led Apprenticeship.

It is recommend that you call the Child Tax Credits office to find out how much you are entitled to and if you can claim: 0843 850 0861.
